Well I have followed Stuarts example and ordered a Canon 40D to upgrade my 10D.:D
I have gone to 7 day shop £769.00 with a free 2gig Sandisk extreme III also ordered the powergrip £99 and an extra 2 gig Sandisk extreme III £17.98. The whole lot less than the recommended price of the camera alone, makes you wonder.
Should arrive in time to try it out for a short break in Scotland next week.
Let you know how I get on and will compare like for like shots from the old and the new.

Some good prices there Patrick, I was going to order the grip from 7DS yesterday but it was shown as out of stock. Cheapest I found it elsewhere was £109 so I'll wait. Could have saved myself £100 if I waited a couple of weeks for the camera :\ . I've always been impatient though, so I've learnt to live with it :D
I wasn't going to get the grip but I'm starting to miss the duplicated controls when shooting in portrait mode that I had with my 350D & grip.
Hope you have some good weather in Scotland - the west coast is my favourite area but that's not say there isn't some wonderful scenery in other parts. Look forward to seeing the results!

Yes they sent me an out of stock notice for the grip. The order has been dispatched according to my account history and it looks as if the order is complete, so perhaps they have had some in today, will know tomorrow or Friday I should think.

Your going to the right area to give it a good testing. Look forward to seeing the pics.

Got home from an appointment at about 4 O clock and there it was waiting for me. First impression after the 10D what a wonderful viewing screen and the speed its like lightening compared with the 10D. Not had time to experiment with comparing exposures with the 10D yet but I can't help feeling its going to be something of an improvement. 4 or is it nearer 5 years in digital terms is a very long time.

Haha! Lucky you, Patrick :D
By the way - how about this (http://dpnow.com/cgi-bin/forum/forum.pl?noframes;read=10098) for a bit of nostalgia?
There are some bad links in there - here are the corrected versions:

It was the 300D that really got me back into photography. At the time I was responsible, amongst other things, for the company intranet and the CIO didn't think much of the quality of the pictures he was seeing on there so he bought me one and plonked it on my desk one Friday afternoon.
Of course I had to take it home to "familiarise" myself with it :) . It was love at first sight, after my plodding Dimage 7 it was a revelation.
The camera is still doing sterling service and quite a few of my team have, and continue to, ""borrow" it to photograph family events etc.

Did the grip turn up as well? I'll be a bit miffed that I didn't order one if it did!

Just seen on Northlight Image http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/Canon_40D.html the 5D, 40D yes 40D, and the 400D are to have cash back deal from 1st Oct until Xmas in Europe.
I did expect to see cash back on the 40D but thought it would be to coincide with the launch of the Nikon D300. But there you go sales pressures can be wonderful for the consumer.

Except those who have already bought it of course!
Just ordered the grip and a new flashgun (580EX II), hope to see them before next weekend when I'm down in Kent for a drink with my brothers before one of them gets married the following weekend. We're also visiting the wedding venue on Sunday so I can take a look at the possibilities and take a few practise shots.

Flash and grip turned up today. Really happy with the flash after about 100 test shots already this evening :D and wading through the manual - 'fraid you need to with this one :\ . Nice you can control a lot of its functions from the camera.
The grip's fine and I'm glad to have the vertical position and buttons back but why oh why couldn't Canon design it to actually match the camera?, it looks like an afterthought slapped on the bottom. Still, it's not on there for its looks.
