Buying Macro Lenses

Hello,

Canon XTi; Sigma DG 28-300mm 1:3.5-6.3 Telephoto/Macro Lens

I love macro photography (both still and moving subjects). I have an XTi and am new to dslrs. Upgraded from Olympus Camedia 4040Z.

I've been using this lens with a couple of close ups - which obviously shrink the depth of field.

I am looking for decent/good macro lenses, but obviously I am on a budget, as many of us are. My budget is $500-700 each. I won't be getting both at the same time *sarc

Although I have this 28-300mm telephoto/macro lens, I would like to increase the distance....Any suggestions?

I would also like to get a dedicated macro lens.

Also, could you let me know what to look for when choosing these types of lenses?

I'm currently testing Sigma's 105mm f/2.8 EX DG and this is a good performer and reasonable value. At closest focus it reproduces the subject at life size onto the sensor (which is called 1:1 reproduction) and you don't have to get too close - the closest focus distance is about one foot.

Therefore, a ratio of 1:1 would be the best starting point for choosing macro lenses?

I am currently using the canon EF-S60mm f2.8 macro. It gives 1x magnification. The closest distance from lens to subject is about 9cm.
The lens can also be used for portraits etc.
Sigma also have some very good macro lense's for your camera and in general they do come a bit cheaper.
Wherever possible a tripod should be used for macro.
