Hi still struggling this time with my new provider.

I have recently changed from Virgin Media to Sky beginning to wonder if this was a wise move.
Been using them now for about two –three weeks, still got my old provider for a few days more but I have disconnected them at my end.

Problems, since Wednesday I have been unable to log on to ebay, the national lottery, AGV internet security and other sites. I can however log on to DP-Now, Seven day shop and some others.
First thought the firewall so deactivated no change.
If I however reconnect Virgin and disconnect Sky all is well.
The sky help desk is flummoxed as much as me.

Next problem and again Sky seem unable or unwilling to help, I cannot get to my profile because my password although correct and accepted by the helper at Sky as being correct wont let me in.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Hi Patrick,

I have to say that as a long-time NTL/Virgin cable modem user and a new BT (via a reseller) ADSL user, I'm much happier with my cable connection.

BT-based ADSL providers, like mine (Eclpse Internet) promise up to 8Mbit connection speed - I usually find that I get only half that and on some days it dips to 500Kbits.

My Virgin connection is now 20MBits and even at peak times it tests (via thinkbroadband.co.uk) at 11-12Mbits.

I also had a problem with my ADSL like you - I could see some sites, but not others. This was fixed by using fixed addresses for DNS rather than using the auto-assign option (as advised to!) in the ADSL router.

Try that - if you don't have a pair of fixed DNS addresses from your provider, they ought to provide them for you on demand.

The only reason I'm with Eclipse on ADSL (incidentally, I have no beef with Eclipse, it's a generic BT ADSL issue here in the UK), is that Virgin can't connect me up to the cable network at the new DPNow office site. So the office has significantly slower maximum bandwidth and far less stability in the actual speed than my cable connection at home. The ADSL router also needs re-starting a couple of times a week during the day for no apparent reason.

It's your decision, but I'd stick with Virgin if I were you.

Hi Ian
Thanks for the quick reply.

The decision is made to late to go back I have signed up for a year; however I have found it equally as fast as the cable was. I am getting altogether far more for my money than Virgin were offering. At least I will when things are sorted out.
Anyway I was having email troubles with them in so much as they were always timing out during busy times and the help desk said it was heavy traffic.

How do I go about changing to DNS? And have you any idea why my passwords no longer work?

I can see I shall have to spend a few more hours on the help line.

I only have experience of using a combined ADSL modem and router. But the DNS option is part of the gateway settings (accessible by logging in to the router via the web browser) and you are usually given the option (often default) of being assigned DNS automatically, or manually entering a primary and secondary set of fixed addresses.

Not sure what the setup is if you are using a separate modem connected to your router.

Hi again Ian

You are as bad a night bird as me.:D

With Virgin I had separate modem & Router, but with Sky it’s a combined Netgear unit.

If it’s only a question of changing to DNS, I can’t help asking the question as to why the help lines haven’t suggested the idea.
But then I got the impression if its not in the script they don’t know.

Hi Ian
Just spent a half hour or so on the helpline to Sky, they believe a faulty router to be the problem and are sending a new one, we will see.

By the way I can’t seem to find how to change my profile on the forum, I need to put my new email address in place.

Click on User CP (User Control Panel) - it's on the grey bar near the top of the window to the right of 'Forum Index'. There are various options to change your profile there.

Err... :) It's the Edit email and password option, or use this url:

http://dpnow.com/forum2/profile.php?do=editpassword

Ian

PS If that doesn't work, I'll investigate deeper for you.

Sounds very strange to me Patrick.

I wonder if adding one of the sites to your 'trusted sites' would work, just to eliminate that possibility.

As for the 12month contract, one would assume that you would be able to get out of this on the principple that it is in conflict with your consumer rights, if of course they are unable to correct the fault.

Oh and in my search to assist, i came accross this:

...interesting....

Has Sky got an inbuilt firewall? if so, it may be able to be disconnected?

Hi
I could not log on to either of those sites.
I have tried making ebay a trusted site that didn't work
I don't actually know if Sky is fire walled, the router will be that part of what they do.

I have tried deactivating the firewall on the computer no joy there.

Did I mention this problem affect both my PC and Laptop in exactly the same way. I think that rules out corrupted files, and points to the router or Sky itself.

The Sky technician on the help line could not make head nor tail of it either hence the new Modem/Router.

Sure is a puzzle, particularly as everything was working fine until last Wednesday.

Given up on Sky and decided ADSL is not worth a tap, I have re-subscribed broadband only with Virgin Media and got my old email addresses back.:D
No trouble whatsoever, to date.

I may keep the Sky broadband as its only £5 of the total package and you never know they may actually solve the problem one day.

i would ditch it patrick, in all honesty it seems others are having problems as well. If people dont cancel, then they have no incentive to resolve the issue. ;)

Glad to see you back up and running again though! :D

Finely Sky rang me Saturday evening to help me sort the broadband, we had just got in and it was inconvenient so I asked could they ring another time so we arranged tonight (31st) at 8:00 they haven't of course rung yet.
I did however re-connect the Sky modem/router to the PC in preparation for the call, low and behold it now works as it should on all sites, and very fast.
What they have done I don't know but I am no longer in a position to cancel the service, so I have Two providers now:(

I had intended to keep the TV & phone but ditch their broadband.
