View Full Version : DPNow South photo expedition?
Prompted by Stephen's invitation (http://dpnow.com/forum2/showthread.php?t=3187) for a foray in the North East, I'd like to start the ball rolling for a DPNow photo meet in the south. The idea is to identify a suitable meeting venue that will provide a good variety of photogenic scenes and subjects. And a choice of date that will suite the most. If anyone can provide a lift to those nearby (I'm in Hemel Hempstead, North West of London, just outside the M25, north of Watford and West of St.Albans.)
So - ideas and suggestions for, let's say, September? Or sooner if there is enough demand! Let's hear you!

Great Idea Ian,
I did look at Stephens invite, but like many others I work during the week, also living in Cornwall does mean you have to travel greater distances. If it was a weekend meet I for one would be prepared to travel with an overnight stop.
I think the problem will be geographical though, but as I said a great way to share ideas and get to know each other personally.

I'd be game for a trip out "darn sarf", despite being one of the "oop north" contingent. I'm not speaking for Stephen, but I'd pretty sure he'd be game for a drive down too. We're especially keen to experience the cultural differences - apparently your toilets are inside your homes and you don't tend to marry your siblings...............should be fascinating
As to where.......well Oxford would be a great location. Lots to photograph in the city itself and plenty of nice scenery in the surrounding areas.

I don't think they have to take the coal out of the bath and put it in front of the fire of a Saturday night either.:\

Audrey, I put my coal on the fire. Like a good roar going before the bath. By the time its my turn its getting a bit cold
Hi Bearface,
you will find there are lots of differences 'darn sarf'. It is a bit drier for one thing :D . We do indeed have lavatories (loos) indoors - sometimes two. *LOL
However the grarss is not necessarily greener; the house prices are bl**dy ridiculous.
I agree Oxford would be perfect.

Must be further south than me then...... or are you suggesting that the 'maid' might be male?? ;)
Anyway, Oxford sounds a brilliant idea... just a short skip down the M40 from me, as I'm 10 miles northish of Banbury
And Mike - your accent's a little bit off...... I know I live with a North Devon Janner (with a reasonably broad accent) but I think I can understand most of the south western accents now ;)

Sounds like a plan.....(Coupekid JR pending)
Oxford sounds like a nice idea, although we would have to park on the outskirts as I dont think they allow vehicles into the city centre.

You can park in the centre, but it'll cost you an arm and a leg. It's also extremely difficult to find parking at weekends. There's only a couple of streets where you can actually park, and there was one multi-storey in the shopping centre which contains Selfridges (I can't remember what it's called..... only lived round here 30 years :\ !!)
There are 3 or 4 park and ride sites - I usually use the one at Pear Tree (yep, the one that's always on the traffic news), tho there's also one at Cowley, south of the city.

Opens the door perhaps for a weekend in the southwest, get the sunrise over Mounts Bay, then morning landings ar Newlyn, some coastal fun ant the Minnak and Sennen Cove, then maybe some city shots in Truro and the sunset over the north coast Carbis Bay.....
food for thought.
I didnt used to live in Cornwall or anything ;) Beautiful place for photography!
Oxford sounds great esp for us Green Bods who use public transport as it is well connected to London. But anywhere with public transport links would be fine.
I am also planning to go for a day up to the Lake District this year as I have not yet been there. I am thinking of catching the night bus to Penrith and then back the following night - will make it a bit of a marathon but so what!
Hey! I'm encouraged by the level of interest - Oxford looks like being the front runner, then :)

Providing the dates are OK i'm interested.

I've got a photographer mate who lives in Oxford , i'm sure he'll be only to glad to help out with parking and sightseeing .

Suggestions anyone? If it's a weekend, I can do most apart from the 11th August (probably going to sunny Devon for a birthday party), or the end of the month (there's muttering going on about the Great Dorset and I'm actually looking at motor home hire at the moment) could have a fortnight in France for those prices!
Caz
Can I just verify whether or not a weekday is possible? Is anyone definitely interested that can't do a weekday?
Ian
I'd try on a weekday - unfortunately, my boss is having so much time off lately that I'm left to cover  - still got over 20 days holiday left, but don't know when I'll get to take it *livid

OK folks, this has all gone a bit quiet.... any more opinions about a proposed date? My boss is having so much time off I'll need a bit of notice

I'd like to propose the following dates:
Friday 3rd August
or
Saturday 4th August
These happen to be convenient dates for me and Julia! But if there are enough who can make one or the other, we will go for one and hoepfully anyone not able will be able to make it to a future meet!
If you could express your preference here, a choice can be made asap.

Just to make our position clear, Tim and I intend coming to this meet. I think its fair to say we would prefer to do the Friday. We look forward to meeting anyone who can make it.

Mmm not too sure about that, but I'm pretty sure that the centre of Oxford would be even busier than it is on a weekday.
I was really meaning travelling to and from Oxford would be less busy on a Saturday, but I expect the city itself would be busier.

Mike Parr
19-07-07, 05:30 PM
Hmm Fri could be dodgy for me Im waiting to hear about having to take 2 customers to play golf.............and I dont even play, but the Saturday would be ok
Due to the nature of my job, Friday is not a good day for me to take off - and since I've already put in for the 10th August it's very doubtful I'd get the 3rd as well and I'd therefore choose the 4th. If you can somehow persuade people that they DON'T want to move house on the 3rd, perhaps it might be possible!
Stephen is right - it will be busier on a Saturday, or at least in the shopping streets. There again, tourist towns in August are always going to be busy.
However, that said, most of them will be thronging around the shopping centre - although you do have to walk through parts of it to reach places like the colleges.

I think Oxford will be busy on any day in the summer.
Love to meet y'all but can't make it until after the 12th.
Weekend would be easier for me but I could possibly ask for a day's leave in August if you announce the date fairly soon.
The weather looks like it will be good in Oxford on 3rd and 4th August unlike most other days this summer so maybe we should jump at it. But having said that the light in mid-summer is not really the best for photography and if it wasn't for the weather issue this year I would have plumped for a date in the early autumn. Anyhow I will leave the final decision to Ian and Julia - hope to hear soon.

Does anyone have a boat? I beginning to feel that wellies won't suffice this time round.
No, but seriously I am beginning to wonder if it would be wise to go to Oxford at all as they have obviously been badly hit by the floods.

If the local conditions (floodwater - specifically) aren't an issue, it looks like Saturday will be the day.
Is anyone here local to Oxford? Has the flooding subsided?
On the other hand, the flooding could be, ironically, a rare photo opportunity?
I believe accessibility (and safety of course) need to be assessed.

As I've said before, it would have to be Saturday for me... I'll watch the local news on BBC South tomorrow night (don't think they broadcast on Sunday). I'm about 30 miles north of Oxford, so it's easy for me to pick up the radio broadcast.
I have just had a look on the BBC Oxford website - they're saying that the rain yesterday wasn't as heavy as expected, so the flood warnings are being downgraded: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/oxfordshire/6921113.stm
I'll keep an ear out tomorrow to see if the rail links have been restored, too - last week they were recommending people round here to use Chiltern from Banbury so that they could get into London via Marylebone rather than Oxford/Reading and Paddington.

Hi All
Having visited Oxford on a number of occasions, may I suggest to all that go to this gathering to use the park and ride service, in fact why not meet up on the car park and all travel in together on the bus.
Parking in the center of Oxford is a nightmare and very costly and I think if memory serves me with park & ride the parking is free and the bus costs about £2.00 return, its about a 3 mile ride. A very good deal.

Yes, we've already discussed that. In fact I was actually wondering if the Park and Ride car parks might be affected by the flooding - central Oxford, from what I can see, escpaped the water, but it's not clear if the Park and Ride areas were.

If we go, I shall definitely be using the park and ride service - think I recommended it in a previous post, as it is horrendously expensive to park in the centre of Oxford. (I can only think of one multistorey up by Selfridges, and then there's the open air pay and display near the station - both expensive).
If this comes off, I'll be going to Peartree - I've checked, and it looks like it's open, whereas Botley is still flooded at present. http://www.oxfordbus.co.uk/index.shtml
I'll be going to Peartree because I'll be coming in on the M40 from Banbury - however, if you're coming in from the south you can find the others here: http://www.parkandride.net/oxford/html/oxford_frameset.html

Subject to the weather behaving itself this week, Saturday it will be. I will follow your example and park at Peartree as well.
Some of us will likely be coming by public transport, so we should all meet at a convenient place in the centre of town - again, I need a good suggestion.

Unfortunately both myself & Tim can't make a Saturday meet. Originally we preferred the Friday, but now commitments on Saturday mean we definately can't do that day.
I would urge anyone intending going on Saturday to make the effort to start early, and suggest locations out of the city. The colleges and environs of the university are beautiful, but Saturday shoppers and the hordes of tourists, do not make for good shooting. There are however places in the Oxford/Cotswold area that may offer alternative locations, trouble is avoiding the honeypots. If people can wait for the evening light, the glow on the buildings made of Cotswold stone is a real treat. Somewhere like the mill & stream at Lower Slaughter (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Lower+slaughter&sll=51.815858,-1.711893&sspn=0.015042,0.047035&ie=UTF8&ll=51.901263,-1.762909&spn=0.001877,0.005879&t=h&z=18&om=1) with its row of stone terraced cottages, it classic stuff. I remember walking along the canal near Thrupp along to Shipton on Cherwell as also being a worthwhile trip, maybe a trip across to Witney and Burford in the Windrush valley would also be better than the centre of Oxford *LOL

What Steve said :D
For those of you who can attend and are considering what time things should kick off, may I respectfully suggest that while this will be a social occasion and an opportunity to put faces to names, it's also a photography meet and therefore it might be wise to consider the optimum times in terms of lighting and er....volumes of tourists.
Photography is fun (fun is just one aspect of it), but as with any discipline, you get the best results by ensuring the conditions are right. If Oxford is a long way for you, why not set off really early to make sure you get the most out of the day? Recently Andrew Thatcher travelled three hours from Birmingham to meet Stephen and I at 1am in order that we could set off in time to catch the first light at Banburgh at 4am........and it's those kind of one-off sacrifices which make all the differences to your results. Plus, it's hardly as though you have to do it every day is it..?
Anyway, just my thoughts. Whatever you do, have a great day.

I agree totally - however, if people are coming by public transport, then getting to Lower and Upper Slaughter would be a hell of a trek - for a start, they're closer to Cheltenham than Oxford! No skin off my nose - there's very little public transport where I am (unless I want to go to Daventry, Banbury or Rugby, in which case I live next to the depot - but the bus doesn't go from there, so I'd have to do a Tim and walk a couple of miles to the bus stop :D )
I seriously don't mind WHERE we meet, but would appreciate a time as the bathroom fitters are hoping to come in on Saturday and lay the floors to the 2 bathrooms I've just had installed (and will have to pay the balance  ).. and once they've done that, it'll be painting the new plaster, once it's dried out :(
And you obviously haven't been to Burford in the summer months - just as bad as Oxford, and even fewer places to park. The same goes for Bourton on the Water and Stow on the Wold - I go through Stow and Burford pretty frequently on the way to/from visiting the old man's family in Devon when we're avoiding the M5 holiday traffic.
If you really want quiet, I'd suggest the Rollright Stones - but no one would ever find them!

We visited Broadway and Stow on the Wold last Saturday and they were both relatively quiet, the tourists obviously thought they were flood bound and were not there, could be Saturday coming may be the same so crowds may not be a problem.
I think I shall make an effort to be there, just name the meeting place.

If it's as nice a week as it's been today, we'll have crowds where ever we go!
Talking of Stow, a morris dancing friend had to go to Moreton (just down the road) last weekend - he said it was a bit hairy getting through, but quiet when they were there. I was also going to Stow last weekend - I was asked to provide the cheese for a 'bring and share' at the NEWTS (near Eydon wine tasters and slurpers) and the man suggested we go to the very good cheese shop in Stow (back to Python again!)

How about if we have two groups the "Hard core";) meet at Peartree at 5.30am to catch the first Bus into Oxford at 6am. Then the other group to meet at a later time at the same place then come into Oxford where we can all meet up in the centre.
Alternatively we could arrive later on the Saturday afternoon to catch the evening light and sleep over (or just sit the short night hours out somewhere pleasant) to catch the dawn on the Sunday and possibly Stephen and Tim may even be able to join us then! There is a YHA in Oxford as well as a caravan park about a mile away and both still have vacancies but could I suggest that we finalise the plan fairly soon so that we have enough time to organise ourselves.
BTW I will be using public transport and for anyone else coming up from London this way the train paradoxically is much cheaper than the coach and a shorter ride too. There is one coming into Oxford at 1.30am and the next one arrives at 6.15am - leaving Paddington at about 5am.

I will aim to arrive at the Peartree park and ride at 10AM. If anyone else would like to meet there at that time, I'd be delighted to see them at that time.
We can then meet others in central Oxford later in the day. I will distribute my mobile number via PM to all those interested in being there on the day.
If you could PM me to let me know when and where you intend to arrive, I can plan accordingly and provide my phone number.
It's true that late morning and into mid afternoon the light won't be ideal, but sometimes that's how it is - but the light will get better towards the end of the day.
Yes, there will be a lot of people in the city, but that should mean some good opportunities for street photography - candids, etc., along with the obligatory architectural opportunities. There will be plenty of challenges!
So, the priority for the moment is to PM me so I can start making arrangements. t-up

If I have missed you out, that's because you haven't contacted me via Private Mail here on the forum :)
The aim, now is to meet up in central Oxford at 10:30AM - would anyone like to suggest a good place not far from the park and ride drop-off?
Ian
We visited Broadway and Stow on the Wold last Saturday and they were both relatively quiet, the tourists obviously thought they were flood bound and were not there, could be Saturday coming may be the same so crowds may not be a problem.
I think I shall make an effort to be there, just name the meeting place.
Patrick
Hey Patrick, will you be coming on Saturday after all? :)

I still need a suggestion for a place to meet in central Oxford once the 10AM Peartree park and ride party arrive from the car park?

Hi Ian
An obvious place would be Radcliff's Camera, the very famous building and
fairly central and well sign posted. An apt name as well.

Thanks Stephen and Patrick - I've decided on Patrick's suggestion, Radcliffe's Camera, see:

There used to be a little cafe at the top of St Giles - but usually try and avoid Oxford unless I'm showing round visitors!
If we are waiting for people in Magdalen Street (the drop off point from Peartree, unless anyone wants to get off by the Radcliffe Infirmary and walk in), there's plenty to look at round there, including, I seem to remember, a nice little church (which might be where the coffee bar was??)
I asked my 'friend' but he wants to get on with the gardening....
Caz
Have a fantastic day. Don't forget to take a Group Shot for posting on the site.
Sorry we can't make it but it's just a bit too far for us to drive in one day. May be next time if it is a bit nearer as I should love to put faces to all the names.
Originally we had considered making a weekend break of it but since then we have booked a Big holiday (Hong Kong and a Far East Cruise) in February so have to cut back somewhere.:D
Hope the weather keeps fine and get some good shots.

Yes that brings bribgs up the question of food, are you guys bringing sandwiches or finding a nice place to eat.
I can recommend a nice little tea shop on the High street on the way down to the Botanical Gardens on the left. Claimed to be the oldest in the country.

Of course, our great leader was the last to arrive :D and we never found out whether Bigbob made it
A brilliant day - even if I was seriously outgunned with my camera :B)
It's not what you've got Caz, it's what you do with it ;) !!
Lovely to put faces to names and get hints and tips to boot! Thanks to Caz, Patrick & Mike, Mike Parr, Sue (spl), Andrew and last but not least Ian & Julia for great day out - and boy, was that sun hot!
