Ok folks, it's time for some fun. The theme for this salon is...
...MY FAVOURITE THING!
Criteria:
This can be anything you like, taken anywhere you like, but it must be your favourite thing (inanimate object), as opposed to a person or animal. It might be a gorgeous pair of shoes, a particularly lovely microwave oven, or even a camera-related item.......you decide...
Good luck..........have fun and don't forget that there's a prize (a Kingston 2GB media card in the format of your choice) for the winning entry.
THE SALON STARTS NOW (THURSDAY 15TH FEB 2007 @ 2240 BST) AND ENDS AT 2240 ON THURSDAY 1ST MARCH 2007. IF ANYONE IS IN ANY DOUBT ABOUT THE ENTRY CRITERIA, JUST PM ME AND I'LL BE HAPPY TO HELP.
............and the Rules
1) All photographs are to be uploaded to the photo gallery at http://dpnow.com/galleries/, they can be put in members own gallery if they wish. The resulting link generated for the photo will then be pasted into the next available space in the Salon thread.
2) One entry per user ID only please, which must be the personal work of the entrant
3) Entries should be "in line" within the thread (not as links to an image held somewhere else)
4) Comments only on entries are welcome within the salon thread itself
5) After the close the curator will indicate a winner and a couple of runners up.
6) The curator's decision is final.
7) Winners should be offered first refusal to choose the next theme and curate the next salon.
8.) If the winner is unable to curate the next salon the current curator may offer that "honour" to any willing volunteer, possibly the entrant in second or third place
9) These rules are to be copied and pasted with a new theme by the new Curator at the top of the new Salon thread with a finish date and time
10) As with all photos posted on DPNow, copyright remains with the photographer and DPNow will not use them without permission.

The criteria for this salon originally included the requirement for all submissions to be taken using a camera-phone, but it transpired that several people didn't have them. I've therefore removed this criteria and PM'd those who'd voiced their concerns. All submissions can now be taken with any camera you choose :D
As most of the first page was taken up with discussion on the now deleted element of the Salon, I've removed those posts in the interests of tidiness and of course to avoid any further confusion. Apologies to those concerned :(

My favorite thing currently is to take Nightshots in general and especially during holiday lighting.

"All men dream, but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity; but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dream with open eyes, to make it possible..."
I'm a big TE Lawrence fan; I love that film :)

Me too. Excellent musical score too. It's worth visiting his grave if you're ever in the area. Nice area, photogenic location.

Went to Moreton in my late teens actually. I was studying Lawrence and his contempories for a political project and I'd wanted to see his house and the lane where he'd crashed. Beautiful place (like pretty much anywhere in Dorset), but his story (not to mention the conspiracy theories about his life and death) is truly intriguing.
Being interested in photography I guess my favourite thing is light. So here's a light that I liked quite a lot. :D

Sunsets & Sunrises are one of my favourite subjects too! I love the colours you've managed to capture here! Did you use a filter by the way? Great pic. Some kind of blurry green bits in a line almost on a level with your signature though. Perhaps cropping at bottom of bushes would ease the distraction!

I love sunrise and sunsets too, so decided to incorporate one into my photo ;)
At the moment though this is my favourite thing, the 'object' being the laptop :D

Anyone who has painted or drawn will understand the feeling.
http://dpnow.com/galleries/data/741/Blank_canvas.jpg
I am finding this a very difficult challenge Andrew. I see your blank canvas and I am not quite sure what you mean. Do you mean you are all inspired to start drawing or do you mean you have reached a plateau? My husband does more painting and drawing than have ever done, but he is going through a "blank" period. I just showed him your "Favourite Thing" to try to inspire him again. I have just packed his art "things" as we go to Cuba shortly and I hope this reinspires him.
I wish I could think of my favourite thing. I get most pleasure from my cameras and computer, as the end is infinite, but I would feel such a moron to submit a picture of my cameras or computer; so I think I will skip this challenge. I am also packing;)

:D Sorry Stephen, I hadn't seen your entry when I wrote the above;)
.....sometime later ... ... I have now looked at your picture Stephen and it is very clever, well thought out and produced. Well that does it, I can't do a computer now.:D

Its that feeling you get when you have a blank canvas or a page if your a writer and that first mark you put down. A feeling of excitement and sometimes fear. Hope you have a great time in Cuba:D one place id love to go to.

AAAhhh Stephen! I truly admire your work! I'm really blown away by this one! I'm sure hp would love it for their advertizing! Now, to me this pic is an outright winner, but I'm not the adjudicator! Very eyecatching!

I know, I know, but I am still trying to work out how you did it. It is so dynamic!
(You learn something new everyday - I thought I was clicking on "More" to see if there was a 'Creeping' Smilie, but by mistake I clicked on "My Pics" and all my pics came up without folders. I didn't know this view was available. It is much easier to see what it is one's gallery this way.)
Results from pottery classes I took my daughters to many moons ago. And they are my favourite thing(s).

It's not much. It's not expensive. It's not very big but it means the world to me.
I don't have much here that's mine since I'm still not an officially landed immigrant in canada. Most of my stuff except a couple suitcases full are still packed up back in Green Bay, Wiscosin.
But I made sure to wear this on my way here last year.
This is my mothers necklace.
Last year, a few weeks before I came to Canada, she decided to give me this necklace for good luck. She immigrated to the states when she was 20.
The necklace and charms had been hers since she was a young teen in Colombia, South America, where she is from.
The 13 is for her birthday - Dec. 13th.
I believe the apple had something to do with her father, my grandfather that passed away before I was born.
Someday, when I have children, and they grow up, I will pass this to one of them.

There's just 24 hours to go folks, so anyone with a submission should be thinking about getting it uploaded and anyone who hasn't yet taken a shot should be dusting off their favourite thing and photographing it.
There's a decent prize up for grabs and it's all to play for at this stage :D

I almost gave this salon a miss because I found the subject too wide (or narrow) but it wasn't until this evening that I realised that this worthless record which is also invaluable and irreplaceable is something that I would really miss..
It is my fathers slide catalogue which he kept until his death in 1964 which I use on a regular basis whilst scanning the collection to the computer.

Well, it's time once again to choose the winner of this latest Salon, the theme of which was "My Favourite Thing". I've been genuinely fascinated (and occasionally amused) by the spectrum of interpretations and while some of the images are closer to my own vision for the theme than others, they're all very impressive and imaginative in their own way. It's also been interesting to get just a glimpse of your lives or at least the faintest idea of what makes you tick, so thanks to all those who participated.
These are the shots which I feel are particularly worthy of mention. If your shot isn't listed here it's simply because I'm referring to those which hit the spot for me personally, and therefore by no means should it's exclusion be taken a measure of your photograph's success or failure.
Firstly, Pol's DVD player and films. It may have been because I'm a Lawrence of Arabia fan and because my 8yo daughter has a DVD player just like the one featured, but the image clearly and unpretentiously represented one of life's simple pleasures for Pol and therefore for me it fulfilled the brief remarkably well.
Tom's daughters' pottery sculptures appealed to me on a similar level. Again it's entirely personal, but a parent's pride in anything their children achieve is something I can relate to, and through the photo I felt we all got to share in that feeling to some extent or another.
For their abstract qualities I actually liked Matt's CD image and SPL's light study. Both demonstrated that it's possible to take these interpretations to the Nth degree without losing sight of the theme itself. Andrew's blank sketchpad showed some serious lateral thinking, so he deserves a mention too.
Ben's Lamborghini model was nicely processed and had a certain dreamish, retro quality about it. It spoke to me without the need for me to read the explanation, which is impressive stuff. Plus I also want a Countach :D
Stephen's laptop image caught my eye thanks to the amazing background and the way it made the machine appear to be flying through the stratosphere towards the viewer. This clearly took some time and effort and the result understandably deserved the praise it received.
Finally Martin's late entry, the photo of his father's slide catalogue, really touched me. Not just from a sentimental perspective, but because I find the entries (particularly those in the "comments" section) charmingly honest and often self-critical. There was someone who could be truly objective about their own work. The slide was a nice touch too.
However on this occasion one shot appealed to me more than any other for it's simplicity and sheer style.................
................the winner is.................
Stu's fantastic guitar and amplifier image, which was made via a light-painting method using a household torch. For all-round effort, execution and adherence to the theme, this is easily my winner.
So congratulations to Stu - very well done indeed. It's now over to you to produce our next theme and then begin a new thread in this section (this will be the 12th salon), copying and pasting the rules from the head of this one and giving clear notice of the theme, it's start/finish date and of course any criteria you wish to include. The salons currently run for two weeks.
Best of luck ;)

Great choice of a winner Tim, and good of you to include your comments, its all helps to add some reasoning as to how your choice was made and how you saw the images fit the criteria of the theme.
Well done Stu, I too liked your picture. I look forward to your choice of theme for the next Salon
Congratualations to Stu, a really interesting (new to me) technique and many thanks to Bearface for his comments on all the entries.
