View Full Version : Does Photoshop slow printing down?
I often find that Photoshop slows printing down and I was wondering if anyone has noticed the same.
I'm testing a Canon Pixma Pro 9000 at the moment and printing times can be twice as fast when using Canon's Easy Photo Print software or a third party app, like ACDSee, compared to printing from Photoshop. I've compared with Photoshop CS3 and CS2 - the latter using different scratch disks to the OS.
The difference shows up the most with very fast printers and the Canon is particularly fast - it can do a reasonable quality borderless A4 print in 49 seconds.

I can't comment on CS2 or CS3 as I don't use them, but I have noticed that some programmes seem to take longer to transfer the image to the printer before it starts to print. Also have found that print quality varies from programme to programme even with the exact same file.

The observation I'm making is mainly regarding the actual print execution. When printing from Photoshop I notice the printer pauses quiet frequently and the hard drive is clearly performing a lot of caching. Wheh printing from other applications, once the printing has started, it's usually a constant action until the print is completed.

That's interesting as I have noticed some programmes cause the printer to hesitate. This is probably down to the way data is transferred to the printer. If the printer starts before all data has been transferred to the printer buffer it pauses while being up-dated. It's possible that if you timed the printing from when you press print to printer completion, the times would be about equal. That way the transfer speed would also be measured.
