In the aftermath of our technical problems last week, and the closing of the original Macro challenge thread, here is a fresh new one and to start things off, have a look at this:

http://dpnow.com/galleries/data/547/P9050750.jpg (http://dpnow.com/galleries/showphoto.php/photo/24325)

Can you identify what it is and win the job of posting the next Macro challenge image?

So what can you come up with?

Interesting that you guessed at that, as I too thought it looked a bit like a lock. Unfortunatly it's not...

The Flash Cube and Magicube were quite different, in that while the Flash Cube needed a power supply to fire it, the Magicube had an inbuilt system that ignited the flash.

Well done Svetlana, the ball is now in your court, ready for you to serve.:)

Is it to do with a tripod or camera accessories I need a clue?

I really can't think of a way of telling what it is to do with without giving away the answer.
However, as a clue I can tell you that any more or less serious photographer has at least one, usually more than one of these things. By "serious" I mean anyone who uses a bit more specialized equipment than a mobile phone to take pictures :)

Graham_of_Rainham
17-09-11, 05:32 PM
It's unlike anything that I've got (I think) :o

But that's probably because I'm hardly ever serious

Funtionally it looks like a one of those clips that simply slides in and locks in place, but has to be pushed down on to open it...

I'll guess at a hotshoe cover ;)

Graham, you are VERY close. "Slides", "locks in place" - all correct. Nothing to do with a hotshoe though.

Next clue then. The particular design of the photographed part of the object varies and depends on manufacturer. For example, those made by Nikon, that I have, look different from this one. I can't tell you the manufacturer of this one though, otherwise you'll guess instantly.

I was, ever-so-gently, made fun of last weekend for getting these so quickly, so maybe I should be looking beyond the hot shoe, to the inner workings of this item ;)

Gentle.Ivy

maybe I should be looking beyond the hot shoe, to the inner workings of this item ;)

I would not say this item has any inner workings, if I understood what you meant correctly (my apologies if I did not - English is not my first language and some meanings slip away from me sometimes).
Of course, "inner" and "outer" are relative terms :) You can call the photographed part of the object "inner", in a sense.

With such rapid fall off in focus, it's something with quite a small radius.

Off to look for thin cylindrical things ;)

Wouldn't be a hair curling thing (not that I have one)

Hi Graham, no not a hair curling tool and no it's not cylindrical ;)

Actually in that image the optical axis was inclined at perhaps 30 degrees to the horizontal, so you are looking at a 'flat' upper surface with several louvres in it (front to back).

Here is another image further towards the front of the object, the camera was again inclined at roughly the same angle but the aperture is closed up to f/11.

Then I'll drop in another clue, it's about 'small' book sized and I imagine most keen photographer's have something similar (although it's not photography kit per se).

To help this along here is another image, the same as the first one but not cropped so much.

OK! Slightly different. This is the setup I use to do some of my Macro shots, but what was I photographing this time???

Just by way of interest, all these little LCD TVs, will not work next year when they turn off the analogue signal, so they are going cheap on ebay and make really good live view monitors, and don't wear the camera battery out

As it's a bit easy, you will have to be really spot on with the ID of the subject.

How do you connect it to the camera? Is it just USB?

The socket on the camera has multiple functions. As well as the USB functions it also streams a video signal of whatever is on the camera LCD. It automatically switches the LCD off as well, so works just like a big rear screen. It's not high resolution but perfectly adequate for composition, focus and all the control/menu screens. If you got a lead with a yellow RCA plug with your camera, stick it in any TV and try it out...

Is the object being photographed a plug on a data cable for a mobile phone?
