View Full Version : Challenge - Where is this? III
OK, let's start a new where-is-this challenge...
My only clue, as if it's needed is that this isn't Venice:
http://dpnow.com/files/ian/P7275883.jpg
Do your best :D
Ian
I'm certain this is Annecy in France. I have visited a couple of times and had my passport stolen here!
Well done Kurt, it is ineed Annecy in eastern France, and sorry to hear about your passport! It's a very pretty location :)
Over to you!
Thanks Ian, I was sorry to lose my passport too. Luckily I managed to get to Geneva while there was a consulate there and got a temporary passport to get home.
Here is another "Where Is This?" challenge. I don't think many clues will be needed.

Hurst Castle :)
Spot on: that was quick. Walked out there the other day, bright sunshine when we set off and then suddenly the mist came up.
Took the ferry back.
Over to you.

We were down that way a couple of weeks ago. The place was very quiet, hardly anyone about
Another easy one, for those that have been there ;)

OK. I hope this may be a bit more difficult (but clues can be offered if I've over-estimated):

No, not in York, Ian.
Is it an English Cathedral? Hereford?
I'd guess at Strasbourg Cathedral

and hopefully I'll be seeing it again later in the week *LOL
Drmarkf
08-09-11, 11:12 PM
Strasbourg it is!
I thought as much... taken from one of the corners of the square (not the main entrance) with the wooden house apparently in front of the cathedral. I worked that out this afternoon as I stood just outside the cathedral door and said I must check dp now later, because I'm sure I'm right!
Of course, your shot (and the one I put up) didn't show the little joke that the carvers made........
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/222/468275088_c74fe4e41d_t.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/carolpgh/468275088/)
If you look at the carvings on the 2nd row down, you'll see something I thought was not usually found on a religious building!
Apologies for the delay in replying, but I'm obviously on the road at the moment.
Next up:

I'll reply to guesses as soon as I can - only connecting via free wifi...
No guesses?? Is anybody there?? ;)
Off out to see my daughter and her beautiful view of the cathedral from her apartment and then off to the mountains.
Oh, and there's also the little matter of delivering the salt n vinegar crisps, PG Tips, chutney and minstrels - supplies for the expat!
It would appear that this is Strasbourg? :)
No Salt and Vinegar crisps in Strasbourg?!
Ian
It would appear that this is Strasbourg? :)
No Salt and Vinegar crisps in Strasbourg?!
Ian
Nope, not Strasbourg - I was still on my way there at this point of the holiday... in fact, it's not even France (although close by)
And you can't get Salt and Vinegar crisps in France, so I always take supplies when I drive over.
Got back in the early hours of this morning, so catching up on comments before I start downloading from our journey. 1440 miles driven in 13 days through 4 or 5 countries (I lost count...) *LOL
Have to admit I did take some more shots of the cathedral in Strasbourg though!
Ah - OK I was distracted by the picture of the carvings :D
Ian
Sorry about that - it was just to prove it was the same place. I wonder if Drmarkf has eaten at that restaurant though... it looks swish.
Clue - I was en route from Dunkirk to Strasbourg.

So unless you have gone for a very circuous route it is either Belgium or Luxembourg or a small possibility of Germany. Wouldn't think you would go through Antwerp, but probably would Brussels so I am going to guess Brussels and the river Senne. A lot of nice castles all over Blegium.

Some very nice castles in Belgium, and I was actually coming down the hill from staying in a chateau... but it wasn't Brussels. I'd discovered the day before that their Peripherique is worse than Paris, having queued round it for 2½ hours so I'm a little further on.

I've been past on the motorway several times, but never stopped. It looks quite Rhineish doesn't it.

Spot on... It's actually quite interesting on that hill - the citadel, architectural ruins and a dig, and the Chateau were we stopped (thank you, whichever late booking site I used... I got a fantastic room at the chateau for 95 euros off the normal price)

Dr Madvibe

Nope, not the Belfast.
Is it too soon for clues?
I can't help it anyway, so heres clue 1: it wasn't ours.
Is it the German U boat 505 which was donated to the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, Illinois and is now a museum ship?

However, this looks strangely like the elephant hedge at Rockingham Castle?

I have seen this in a garden programme, but where it is I can't remember !
Not Rockingham Castle and it did feature on the television. The strange shape of the hedge was caused by heavy snowfall years ago. - K.

Thanks John - another beautiful cathedral. They've been going a bit quick lately, so wonder how this one will do. I did think of re-posting the one which was live just before the site crashed, but no-one had guessed it (it was Haut-Cagnes from Renoir's garden), so here's another... Is it one of your favourite places Caz?
Just a guess. Lyon Cathedral?
Nope.. head north
Over to Google Maps then!! - K.
I was replying on my mobile at lunchtime, so didn't see the two earlier guesses from Audrey and John - no, I wouldn't dare use Monte Carlo again so soon after the last time and it's not one of my favourite places: it was my first visit, although I thoroughly enjoyed the evening (won't say what I enjoyed, as it might give away too many clues...!)
Audrey - I think that's in the south, so no...
Kurt - I think you may have gone too far north..
Audrey - I think that's in the south, so no....
I was just working north from Monte.*LOL
(And we stayed at a Youth Hostel there with our 4 children on the way to a camping holiday in Frejus in 1976):D
I don't think I can cut the mustard . . . unless . . . Dijon?
I was just working north from Monte.http://dpnow.com/forum2/../i/smileys/laugh.gif
(And we stayed at a Youth Hostel there with our 4 children on the way to a camping holiday in Frejus in 1976):D
Ah, I wondered if you'd got the earlier holiday confused with this one! Since there's only me that drives, I'd need more than 2 weeks to drive to Nice at my usual rate of about 100 miles a day max. The worst leg is home to Dover (184 miles).
I don't think I can cut the mustard . . . unless . . . Dijon?
Oooh..... heading in the wrong direction. Audrey was thinking of my last holiday in April when I posted the sky mirror in Casino Square in Monte Carlo. This time I've driven from Dunkirk through Belgium and Luxembourg to Strasbourg, and I'm on my way back up through France. However, I took a few detours, so it's not always due north! You were closer with Reims...... so it's between the two.
Lost interest or stuck? A clue is that I'm about 100 miles from Strasbourg in a western direction - and we'd just attended the best son et lumière I've ever seen.
I for one have been very busy. I became a Grandad twice. My next guess is Nancy going from your directions and Googling the Cathedral there.
Congratulations Kurt - on becoming a Grandad twice over (twins?) and also on getting the location: Nancy. We arrived there in the twilight and weren't that impressed until we found the Grande Place/Stanislav Square. I took that standing near the statue of Stanislav - in the full size version you can just about see my reflection.
So, when do the first images of your grandchildren go up??
Thanks Caz. Yes twins boy and a girl two months earlier than expected. I hope to see them this weekend in Switzerland.
Here is my puzzle. You may not be able to guess where I was standing to take this snapshot, but you may guess the subject.
- K.http://dpnow.com/galleries//data//500/DSC_3597.jpg
Sorry about the quality of the shot. Not one thing in focus and camera shake, I must have been having a particularly bad day!
It's Happisburgh Lighthouse, taken from a viewing point in a hedge.:)
That was quick. The viewpoint is actually quite a way away in East Ruston Old Vicarage Gardens. Worth a look if you are in the area.

Is it in the UK?
Dennis
Is the Royal Naval college chapel at Greenwich
DennisP
28-11-11, 11:36 AM
Quite correct Martin, well done. Did the clue 'connectef with the sea' help you get the right answer. Thank you Barrie for the compliment, believe it or not this was taken with a Panasonic TZ7 compact camera .
Thanks Dennis
To be honest the 'sea' clue didn't help as much as it should have. I researched sea sailors with churches but didn't make much progress. I found the naval connection in your gallery and then it was just plain sailing.:)

Realise I'm a bit late to the party on this but Dennis was wrong on that one. It is actually Derwent Reservoir, Ladybower is downstream and the dam doesn't have the twin towers.
Sorry folks, pedantry over :o
Well if nobody else is having a guess at this one I'll have a go, its looks like Wimpole Hall the NT property in Cambridgeshire.

I could be totally wrong, but that looks like it's taken from the top of the hill in Lynton, looking down on to Lynmouth.
If I'm right, you can just see the Rhenish tower popping up behind the top bridge.

Thanks Martin. I know it very well, an ex-partner's mother lives there... and I've walked down (and up) that hill several times - much prefer taking the railway: as you can see from my shot, it's almost vertical there!!
I'll put something up tonight as I'm on my netbook at work with no access to my photos...

I think it's Canon's Ashby, but it's ages since I've been and even after a dig around Google images i remain a bit uncertain!
Spot on Drmark. I cheated as it's a slightly unusual angle: taken from down at the bottom of the garden, by what's known locally as the "lion and lollipop" gate.
I see it at least 10 times a week as I drive to and from work.
Drmarkf
10-12-11, 10:19 AM
Here's something slightly different. I chose the shot not for its photographic qualities but to make sure it had the right balance of clues and (I hope) no giveaways.
Aircraft buffs will probably get this right away but, for everyone else, where (and what) is this?

I'm thinking Duxford - but as to the aircraft, I don't have a clue!
Drmarkf
16-12-11, 10:41 AM
No, not Duxford, but it is another of the famous old aerodromes in Britain where they fly and restore old aircraft.
It's a British aircraft that I'm absolutely sure everyone here will have heard of.
chuffchuffbuff
16-12-11, 01:43 PM
It's a Hawker Hurricane, but I don't know where.
Drmarkf
16-12-11, 03:56 PM
[I posted to this earlier today, but it seems to have got lost in cyberspace???]
So, here we go again: No, its not Duxford, but it is indeed one of those old WW2 UK airfields where they now restore old aircraft. There are a few twists to this, which I'll offer as future clues if everyone's still stuck...
The aircraft type was responsible for around 60% of kills by the RAF during the Battle of Britain.
Drmarkf
16-12-11, 03:59 PM
Ah! I can now see my post and a response so I may have cache or cookie problems - I'll clear both.
Yes, it's a Hurricane.
So, where's the restoration being done? It's rather a special process.
Drmarkf
22-12-11, 10:25 PM
So, this is a hanger on an old airfield that's much better known these days for motoring associations than for flying ones.
Any guesses?

At one time, it was the entrance to a large country estate, which has now been sold off - although I believe the family concerned still own this part. It's mostly free entry (except for Boxing Day and Easter Monday)
Well, I haven't the first idea so I reckon so :o
Is it in East Anglia?
Nope. Come west.

Another clue... I'm really surprised that no one drives past this (or usually queues, when there's an event on).
For now, I'll just say it's on the A5.

Woburn Abbey?
Woburn Abbey?
No, wrong county and I don't think Woburn is on the A5. When the estate was broken up, the owner retained this. He sold part of the estate to a Russian gentleman - you may have seen a programme about it and what he's done. In fact, the family who sold the estate owned a great deal of the town (this is still just outside the developed area). Besides the sport which takes place here, the owner was also known for sports which are very popular on this site...
I think this one's died a death - I didn't think it was that difficult, but there again it's fairly local to me, and only about a mile from where I work.
Nowadays it's a conference centre and a sporting venue, although only open for just over half the year as the going can get a little difficult some times.

You're going to have to tell us, Caz!
Phew! decided to have yet another search after unsucessfully trawling the length of the A5 (virtual of course) last week and I've just found found it. ItsTowcaster racecourse and conference centre.

Well done Martin - the former owner was, of course, the Hesketh family (connection to other local sport - F1 and bikes); racecourse- difficult going...

Only just spotted this. I will have a look tomorrow.

Definitely not! It reminds me of the statue on top of the Casino Ruhl in Nice, but she's dressed in a swimsuit...
Here's a big clue: "You are in the right area Caz."
Oh boy am I glad that you showed us this side of the statue.... I have no idea whether the other at the Palais de Meditterranee was a Damien Hurst - it was a very jolly lady.
From a quick google on the Riviera, I reckon this was at the Pont de Fontville in Monaco.
Well done Caz. I never saw the other side of her until I googled and saw this:

TheBull1875

27-02-12, 10:29 PM
No.
I'd better give so many clues someone's bound to get it or we'll all get bored!
It's right at the other end of the island from St George's (the image with the Grenadian flags was taken at the Carenage bay in St Georges). It's a cemetery at the back of a Catholic church in a town who's name means 'jumpers' or 'leapers' in French. Many years ago a group of the island's original inhabitants were being chased by the French (or maybe it was the Brits, I forget) and rather than get captured they threw themselves over the cliff at the far end of the cemetery.
That should do it...
What's the name of the town?
Hi Mark
Its been a quiet week again.:)
It must be the cemetery just above the cliffs of Carib Leap at Sauteurs.
Martin
I am sure you are right Martin. Here is a link:

I've edited the title for you - changed it to B-W where is it?
If you want to re-edit yourself just click on the downward facing arrow, top right of the grey strip above the photo, the little white arrow icon you can see top right in the grey strip below 'upload photo' - then click on 'edit photo'.
I imagine it's probably similar to the method used in FTU.

Yes, it is Northampton Guildhall. Fantastic Victorian gothic, and beautiful inside too - well worth a visit on Open Heritage days. There's a lovely William Morris stained glass window on the stairs, and the Great Hall is just so over the top it's amazing:

Geoff.
I've just realised that I've seen this before, I drove past it last year while on holiday in Menorca! It's on the outskirts of Ciutadella on a roundabout on the ME1 road just past a BP petrol station. If I am correct, you did well to miss out most of the buildings when you took the photo.
Geoff.
Spot on Geoff. Well done. I think I walked round the roundabout a few times looking for the best angle.
Here it is again with some of the clutter.

Thanks Martin, the prancing horse relates to the festival of St Joan in Ciutadella where horses are ridden through the streets, the riders get the horses to rear on on their back legs then the crowds try to touch the horses belly. I don't know why but they all seem to enjoy it!

No, its not near Hartland.

Hello Martin. it is not near Dover.

No? There is a large globe near the Castle . . .
