Free transport on buses, trams & trains on New Year's Eve in Melbourne meant the city was humming with millions of people & Fireworks venues extremely popular near Federation Square. Happy New Year to you & yours, one & all!

Took a walk along one of our local beaches this morning, a few people out wearing big coats, scarfs and hats etc. Walked down to the waters edge took a couple of pics of the rather rough sea, turned back up and saw these folk having what looked like a picnic? at the top of the beach. I asked them if they minded me taking their picture (thought theres one for the website!) to which the lady in the middle answered, you should have been here a quarter of an hour ago I have just been in for a swim!.
So here is my contribution to the new years day photos. I will call it "Warming up" I think she needed it

Happy New Year everyone - hope that the fried breakfasts and fresh air have chased away any lingering hangovers!
Took this at a local gliding club located on the Mendips this afternoon. All I can say is that these guys must be keen - it was freezing up there (and that was just at ground level!)

Here's my first time to share with the forum. I didn't include the shot where the olive missed the glass, although that might best typify 2006 for many.

... And did you see the documentary about Canterbury Cathedral on the telly last night? Must admit I watched it when I got back from the pub!
Caz
Ok, mine's a bit of a cheat - I set the camera up, having already taken a couple of photos of the people in the pub but they're a bit on the rubbish side!
Just after midnight, passed the camera to the landlord and asked him to take one of me and my partner, and this is the result. The theme down our local was 'black and white', so at least one of us fulfilled the criteria (and I've now managed to get most of the glitter of his suit!)

I had noticed that. Is it typically a Yorkshire delicacy or do people eat black pudding Nationwide?

Well, we eat it in Essex :) . Not often admittedly but it goes so well with a fry-up ("grill-up" in my case) - you should try it. Just don't think about the ingredients
I have tried it Stuart. Some of the men in our Photographic Socy, bring it as their contribution to the Buffet when we have one.:\ :D

I think Black Pudding may originate in Lancashire. I remember as a child an old monologue by Stanley Holloway where he refers to "Bury, where Black Puddings is made..."

Yup, it comes from Bury originally. However I feel that we've made it our own across t' Pennines, and they don't seem to mind stuffing their faces with our Yorkshire Puds, do they..? :D
My daughter (aged eight) loves black pudding, but won't eat such "delicacies" as baked beans.........or roast beef. The mind boggles...
After spending about 3 hours taking the Christmas trimmings down and putting them away my husband just flopped. I was trying out my new camera and when I saw people's NY Day entries, I realised this was the only picture I had! You can see the empty boxes which still need to be filled with the lights that are strewn along the hall. *xmashat01
Like Pol I took one about 1.15 am through my bedroom window, of the moon, but it is no good and this is the only other pic I have of today.

It belongs wherever those who like it can actually buy it; pretty much anywhere where there's enough demand... :)
We have a saying here in Yorkshire - "Don't knock it 'til th'as tried it..." :D

I spent New Year's Eve over my sister's house with relatives and firends. I missed the fire crackers in downtown Athens.
This is a photo from some local cafes located inside a Mall where I went for a coffee tonight.

That's spectacular George - would have done for your 'Blue' entry for the salon.
A Happy New Year to You.

Here's a few from my New Years day, mostly centred around a walk to and around Fleet Pond, which is actually the largest freshwater lake in Hampshire, England, in the town of Fleet, which is not far from Farnborough.
These were all taken using an Olympus E-400 and Digital Zuiko 50-200 (100-400) f/2.8-3.5 (see them in my forum gallery (http://dpnow.com/galleries/showgallery.php/cat/547) for more details). I had stupidly forgotten to set the camera to record RAW files, so these are all from the in-camera JPEG, though some tweaking has been done in Photoshop on some, in no particulrar order:

I found this view rather representative of the calm and quiet kind of day that we had for New Years.

Finally, a marsh land view adjacent to the Fleet Pond. This could have done with some more features in the sky...

I am sorry but it comes from further north originally, does nobody remember Nick Nairn (the celeb chef) being very ill seeing it been made in a wife's scullery a few years ago?
The best Black Pudding is made in Stornoway in the Western Isles of Scotland and can be found on the Web!
Sorry I am a day late, but we have not been near a computer for a few days.
Hope you like them!

No need to apologise Harry, but you may want to check your sources :D
There isn't a person alive today who can categorically prove who made the very first black pudding, as in mediaeval times they were made and consumed throughout Europe, and indeed long before that. However Bury is recognised (not that it really matters... ) as the originator of the black pudding simply because it has promoted the dish and developed the recipes for longer than any other claimant or region.
An A to Z of Food and Drink by John Ayto (Oxford University Press) acknowledges this, as do many historical / culinary / cultural authorities on the subject. If this is now subject to debate, we should perhaps collate our research and come up with a definitive spiritual home for the great black pudding..........or perhaps not :D

Cor - star trail time exposure pictures. :D Used to do those with black and white home developed film as a teenager. I used to leave the camera in the back garden with the shutter open and kind of feared that the camera would be gone by the time I returned!

I generally find black pudding isn't quite as delicious as it looks or my palate expects :\
But I live in hope :D Which is strange considering what it's made from!
Ian
Black puddings are traditionally made all over Europe, and they have big black pudding fests all over the place, too. Even in the Philippines there are traditional dishes made from, er, some of the key ingredients to black pudding, though not made as a sausage...
Ian
Good for you! (Not letting the elements prevent you from going on your walk). I feel a bit sorry for the dog though! :)

:D ian you should def go next yr.we always say same oh we'll go next yr & never do.it realy was soooooo much better than on tv only thing was i tried being clever & didnt want to stand on waterloo bridge which was near on empty at 9pm no i had to go down onto embankment    sardines or what & the view wasnt anywhere near as good if you wanted to take pics there was hardly any uninterupted space ie heads/lamp posts /boats all in your view.
worsttttt was getting back out after it truly was a nightmare everyone from embankment was filtered to charing cross there was thousands so def def not anywhere to be taking at least under 14 years + who wouldnt be able to find their way home when not if they get lost or seperated from you..but still fantastic night display was superb :D

Hi Ian...sorry I hadn't seen that reply of yours, so don't think I was intentionally rude in not answering! Whereabouts in Melbourne does her sister live & what does she think of it & Australia in general! I find parts of Melbourne in particular quite sterile...meaning without wildlife of any consequence apart from the odd possum or 2! But coming from Africa causes me to be a tad biased with that regard. Australia is a fine place in general apart from the heat!!!

Hi Jocelyn,
Not sure where in Melbourne - I will try and find out. They are out there for a few years with the company her husband works for, so I believe the plan is to return eventually.
Having been born in Australia (Newcastle) but not having been there for 42 years, I do have a certain fascination with the place!
