Thanks Autumn for running the last competition and congratulations to Archangel and Bearface for being runners up.

THE THEME FOR THIS SALON IS

B L U E

Hopefully, you will see lots on potential for interpreting this, and I would encourage a bit of lateral thinking if at all possible.

The closing date for the competition will be noon GMT on the 14th January.

Here are the rules. Please take a moment to read them prior to shooting or uploading your submissions.

1) All photographs are to be uploaded to the photo gallery at http://dpnow.com/galleries/ (http://dpnow.com/forum2/../galleries/), they can be put in members own gallery if they wish. The resulting link generated for the photo will then be pasted into the next available space in the Salon thread.
2) One entry per user ID only please, which must be the personal work of the entrant
3) Entries should be "in line" within the thread (not as links to an image held somewhere else)
4) Comments only on entries are welcome within the salon thread itself
5) After the close the curator will indicate a winner and a couple of runners up.
6) The curator's decision is final.
7) Winners should be offered first refusal to choose the next theme and curate the next salon.
8.) If the winner is unable to curate the next salon the current curator may offer that "honour" to any willing volunteer, possibly the entrant in second or third place
9) These rules are to be copied and pasted with a new theme by the new Curator at the top of the new Salon thread with a finish date and time
10) As with all photos posted on DPNow, copyright remains with the photographer and DPNow will not use them without permission

Good Luck to you all, don't forget there is a 2GB memory card up for grabs here t-up

Hi George, this is a very interesting image to me. Presumably it's a composite of more than one shot?

I really like the scene, however I'd be keen to hear how it was produced, if you have no objections?

Thanks :D

Hi Andrew & Tim,

Sorry I couldn't reply earlier. I was over in my sister's home since last night where we spent the New Year's Eve with relatives and friends.

The photo is original (slightly post-processed and reduced in size). There is nothing artificial or computer generated there, apart from how it probably looks to you. It was taken over a boat (a smaller tour boat that can hold approximately 30-40 people that does daily tours for tourists around the island).

Hi Life in a Lens (I really don't know your first name),

This is a photo from the Greek islands and more specifically in the island of Paros. The little chuch is located on a rock composition as you can see which is very very close to another small island like some others that are around the main island of Paros. Churches like these exist by thousands (really by thousands) in the Greek Islands. If you ever visit Greece and especially some of the Greek Islands you will see what I mean. All kind of little churces everywhere, even next to lighthouses!

Hi George, I think this is a great picture - well done!

My only nagging feeling is that where the sky meets the horizon at the left, it doesn't look natural. So I did wonder if the sky had been borrowed from another picture - nothing wrong with that, just curious. But it's a very striking picture indeed :)

Ian

Hi Ian,

As I previously wrote to Andrew and Tim, the picture is natural. I haven't done any artificial work and actually I don't need to do that since in Greece the skies are almost blue most of the times.

If you are talking about sky clouds cut by the horizon line, it is because I lower much the camera (actually I hang myself slightly from the boat) in order to make the photo look taken from down to up, because I wanted to look like I took the photo just slightly above the water and avoid the look of everything looking lower than the level a normal photo would look like.

That way the lower clouds look like they are touching or being cut by the sea.
I really don't mind to say that a photo is artificial as long as it is, but this one is not (actually none of my photos posted on DPNow were ever artificial, except of the reworked version of the "Evening Island Return" where the island appeared as a background and I asked for comments in comparison to the original shot without the island).

Though I am happy of your comments and also Andrew's and Tim's because it looks that some photo views are unique, strange or rare, like the Stella Artois "hover" effect sometime ago. Generally but not very often (only when the situation permits that) I like to experiment with light and angle views.

George

I guess this was before the Christmas 2004 disaster?

My father lives in Thailand and we have been invited to visit - probably at the end of March, though he doesn't live near the sea as far as I know!

This is not my entry as i have entered the previosly, but My wife reminded me of this one. this was taken 13 1/2 years ago on a cheap little 35mm film camera, as you can see by the Location there was restrictions in force regarding flash etc, Im not sure if i was really aloud the camera in there. The Baby is our son nicknamed "Dinky". Do feel free to move this to another forum if you feel its should be elsewhere.

Yes, it was either 2002 or 2003. However, we were in Sri Lanka and in the Seashells Hotel, which was literally on the beach, 8 weeks before the disaster. Both Thailand and Sri Lanka rate as our all time favourite holidays. They are beautiful places and fantastic for photography.

I to am a Dr Who fan and also the spin off "Torchwood". I like the current Dr and the way that the Beeb have made this new incarnation worth watching.
I was a huge fan when Jon Pertwee was the Doc (showing my age now) I found it started going downhill after Tom Baker. :)

THE RESULT

Thanks everyone for their entry in the Salon competition, there were 27 photos this time which I think is a good amount, especially as quite a few openly admit it was not an easy subject to come up with a photo for.

Now if I'm honest its been quite a tricky one for me, not to mention the dilemma I've had in not wanting to appear as if I was showing any favouritism. However at the end of the day quality, and interpretation has to win through, and its that and my own personal gut feeling for which I like that has at last brought me to a decision.

So Third place goes to Josh Bear for his picture at Henley on the Thames
http://dpnow.com/galleries/data/597/House_and_Trails1.jpg

I really liked the feel of the photo, it was quiet and calm and the eye was led by the aircraft contrails into the picture, the theme fitted the picture well too.

In Second place I placed Martins picture taken at Manchester Airport

http://dpnow.com/galleries/data/579/Manchester_Airport2.jpg

Again I loved the picture, it is just so BLUE. However the converging lines led the eye into the scene, it was like something from a sci fi film. It also brought back memories of my own journies down that very walkway to the station. Great picture Martin.

So in First place, I really had to award it to Bearface for his picture of pouring the blue wine into the glass

http://dpnow.com/galleries/data/685/IMG_1738x.jpg

http://dpnow.com/galleries/data/500/IMG_1738x.jpg
As he's a personal friend, to win, his picture had to be clearly better than the rest, not only in fulfilling the criteria of the theme, but also technically and artistically. Tim has interpreted the theme with a skillful and clever image, timed to perfection, and with spot on presentation.

So, congratulations go to Bearface for winning, but also to Martin and Josh for their excellent pictures too. Indeed, well done to everyone who entered.
