Here's a new challenge for you all - it's an idea suggested by David, who helps with a lot of technical work underneath DPNow.

It's a bit like a salon, but there are key differences. I start the process by posting a photo (below) and the challenge is for you to guess where it was taken (country and name of the town or city will suffice). The first person to guess correctly by posting their correct guess of the location will take on the reins and post another picture that represents the challenge again.

There is no point in posting completely cryptic pictures - there need to be some clues in the photo. I would suggest posting photos of interesting places (not your back yard!) maybe from your holidays. I will moderate challenge and reserve the right to ask the poster of the next challenge picture to think again if it's not appropriate. But in the end the idea is to have some fun and share your interesting photos from around the world! Here goes:

http://dpnow.com/galleries/data/500/P6240123.jpg (http://dpnow.com/galleries/showphoto.php/photo/22667)

If you get stuck, I will provide some clues later :)

It's clearly Italy, but, but, but! (splutter!).

Anyway, well done Stephen - over to you!

OK, its all very well being well travelled, but the thing is you tend to take holiday snaps at well known places, which are a dead give away with a challenge like this *LOL

Anyway, here is a shot which perhaps to most will not be instantly recognisable. However there is a big clue in the photo, which to some may well make it more obvious.

The shot was taken through glass so there are a few reflections and smudgy areas, but its the view that's important. I'd really like the name of the city and the name of the clue which gives it away :)

My guess? Shea Stadium in New York City, and from the angle I'm guessing the shot was taken from the Queens Museum of Art.

The stadium (and the Grand Central Parkway) gave it away. But then again I could be wrong.

Sorry Stephen! I'm afraid I didn't have a clue as to how other postings appear and expected them to show as they do on the E-system forum. However, it's now sunk in. As they say, my (being two pictures) behind, didn't look good in this!:o

Don't worry about it Bob. I saw the challenge in the DPNow e newsletter, looked at the challenge, googled for the restaurant, copied the link and was just about to paste it and post it when I saw I was 2 or 3 pictures behind.*LOL

Now the pics seem to be a bit male orientated F1 and football etc so I don't stand a chance.

Thanks for your support, Audrey. I see I must spend some time exploring this forum before dashing in and posting. I attempted to post an 'introduce yourself' one last night only to find that I wasn't logged in (although I feel sure I ticked the remember me box). Hi Bob, I'm very sorry that you are experiencing teething problems with the DPNow forum - I will do my best to help you get to grips with things here. As, I understand, you are familiar with the e-group forum, things should be fairly familiar on here as the e-group was based on the DPNow setup. I suspect there is a browser cookie issue and these can sometimes occur when someone is new to the site. But do let me know if you have any more problems and I'll see what can be done. We all really value your input here!

Hi Ian — nice to hear from you on this forum (I know you started it!) and since I'm logged in to the E-group one, it's almost like getting you in stereo!

I've just done a test on E-group to see if I could create as post without being logged on and it wouldn't let me. On DP it allowed me to do so but when I tried to submit it requested that I log on.

If I am having teething problems, I am sure it's me and not the site. Thanks for the great welcome and please take my 'livid' smilie with a pinch of salt or pepper or snuff, I'm happy here and looking forward to posting and learning from non-oly members. And believe me, I have much to learn and being four score years and one, the absorption of anything new takes a bit of an effort.

If I don't 'talk' to you again before Christmas, Ian, my best wishes to you, Julia and your family for a merry Christmas and a Happy and Heathy 2011 (and beyond).

Thanks again
Bob

Clearly, this new challenge will only work well if the flow of pictures is maintained at a timely rate, so from now on if the previous winner let's me know that they can't post a new picture within 12 hours, or 12 hours elapses, I will provide a replacement picture.

However, that doesn't necessarily mean the 'tardy' winner has forfeit their turn. Instead, they can provide a suitable picture for use the next time the 12 hour limit is reached, with their picture on stand by for such an opportunity.

I hope that makes sense - if not, please let me know! :)

Ian

Ian
09-12-10, 02:54 PM
OK, as explained in the previous post, I'm restarting the challenge with a new picture while Mike Parr takes his time to find a suitable image of his own. So here it is:

http://dpnow.com/galleries/data/547/DSCF0044.jpg (http://dpnow.com/galleries/showphoto.php/photo/22725)

This was taken seven years ago, no less, using a Fujifilm Finepix S7000 bridge camera. I only had a JPEG file to work with and the colour balance and contrast were poor, but I had limited flexibility in knocking this into shape really.

If you can name the cruise ship as well, that would be a bonus! :D

Ian

Autumn

Is it Milford Sound, New Zealand and one of the Princess Cruise Ships?

Ian

Is it Milford Sound, New Zealand and one of the Princess Cruise Ships?

No, on both counts, but the term 'Princess' has a relation to the company that owns the liner. And we're in Europe, not south of the Equator :)

Ian

Kurt
09-12-10, 04:29 PM
Dubrovnik?

Ian
09-12-10, 04:57 PM
Dubrovnik?

You are a winner, Kurt, well done! It's the Franjo Tudjman bridge, outside Dubrovnik in Croatia and was only completed the year before. And the ship is the P&O Oceana, which I think was one of the largest cruise liners in the world when it was built in 2000. And here is a closer view:

http://dpnow.com/galleries/data/547/DSCF0161.jpg (http://dpnow.com/galleries/showphoto.php/photo/22729)

The picture of the Oceana by the bridge was taken in the morning. The one above was taken in the afternoon. We were on a modest sized fishing boat on our way from visiting some islands near Dubrovnik when the Oceana, passed by. Boy were we bobbing around for a while with those bow waves!

The 'Princess' link is that the Oceana's original name was the Ocean Princess until she was renamed Oceana earlier in 2003 and, yes Audrey was right - as the Sea Princess she operated as part of the Princess Cruises operation, and I honestly wasn't aware of that when I first posted the picture!

But over to you Kurt...

Well, last night went well although I didnt take any pictures, just boring ones of the lads from work in various states!

This picture should be very easy as I do not have much time today to look for, or take a decent picture for this so I have included one that I taken on my iphone recently when I took my daughters ice skating. As I say it's easy because I want this to get moving again and if I guess the location right in the future I will make more of an effort to put up a good picture!

Is it in the Liguria region? Lots of medieval hill-top villages there, similar in fact to St. Paul De Vence but without the surfeit of artists. (it was the sign that looks like a painting that made me think of St PDV . . . along with the roof tiles)

Not too tough for me as I was born in Norfolk, although it has been many years since I visited Swaffham.

It is tough to find another challenge from my rubbish pictures as many appear too obvious or too incomprehensible. So I have come up with this as your starter, if no one guesses I will add another shot of this place tomorrow -- but you will lose points if you wait for that!

K.

Was it ever anything other than bleak along there? One year we were there on April 1st and it was so hot we were in flimsy summer clothes on the bleak, empty beach. That's my most abiding memory of Hunstanton, sunbathing on April 1st and actually getting tanned. *LOL

I'll see if I can find a suitable pic for the next challenge without having to rummage through old pics to scan something.

I'm guessing by the angle of the sun that the Hotel is facing south and we can just see something of a shingle embankment over to the far left. So, even though I don't know the area at all, I'd have to say it was on the south coast

They're mostly houses and a cafe you see rather than a hotel iirc.. The picci was taken at about 9-00 am so the sun is coming fromn the east - parked cars facing north.

Yes the sea is to the South and that's a small inlet from a harbour into a marina.

Yeah well ... cars get themselves all over the place, eh. *LOL

The shingle embankment is at the very back of the picci, to the left of that thatched cottage.

It's nowhere near Pevensey or Cliftonville. It's not in the SE.

Christchurch and Mudeford are much nearer. Just keep going westward a bit more. Another clue - the place name was changed in the late 1800s so people still tend to use both the old name or the new name for the harbour, which is in a bay.

Spot on Barrie. :)

It's West Bay Harbour and Marina. It's sometimes known as Bridport Harbour too though the name was changed to West bay harbour maybe 200 years ago.

We sometimes go down there for breakfast in the harbour cafe on our way to and from various campsites in the West country. It's nice having a campervan but nevertheless a welcome treat to have a couple of poached eggs on toast cooked for us in West Bay harbour cafe. :D

Flippin heck Barrie, I think you are right. That's been puzzling me all night

Have a good look around there on google steet view. Google for West Bay Dorset - Maps - then that should take you there. The wider angle view of the maps should show you how the harbour and marina are going inland. That shows why the sea is opposite the harbour.

A joint effort here, Anne recognised it and I confirmed it was. :D

We stayed a few days with Anne's mum and from memory I think it was a little gusty.

I'm off out to brave the cold with the camera again and hope I don't slip - the canal is not looking very inviting at the moment.
I shall leave the next 'What Is This Place' pic below and will not be able to offer feedback until later.

This was taken over twelve and a half years ago (April 1998) using a very early digital camera, an Agfa ePhoto 1280.

I'm looking for place and country, the latter probably being reasonably easy and I chose the country because of Christmas (not the religious aspect, though). I'm pretty sure some hints will be required for the place, but we'll see...

Well done again, it's Saariselka, which is a spa resort in northern Finland, far above the Arctic Circle. It's at near sea level and the small downhill ski centre has slopes with a 180m drop. It's north of Rovaniemi, which is the traditional home (for Finns!) of Santa Claus! :)

Thanks Olleyreg. I've been looking for a suitable photo for this challenge but, even though I have got thousands, it's hard to find one that has clues in it.

I've picked this one just because I like it, also anyone who has been in this area should recognise it. So, where was I when I took the picture and what is in the distance?

No, that's not right, but I am guessing that you have missed the last few posts and not noticed that we are on a new picture now!

Nice looking place (nice image too).

So was right about Celtic ? Get your reference to near and far, very subtle and good, guessing Aran Islands?

I think Aran Island is due north of Wales, not east.

It's a lovely photograph.

Aran, Autumn, West coast of Ireland. Arran is a wee bitty north though :-)

No, you are getting further away now by several hundred miles. Just to clarify, NT = National Trust. Most of what is in the picture is run by the National Trust.

I haven't been here but a quick search on Google images shows that Canons Ashby looks similar to the building in the photo.

:-)

Going the wrong way!!!! I was only a seaman for 28 years, not supposed to know East from West!!!!

OK, have to rethink.

That is approx 90 miles away.
Another clue: It is in a National Park.
Another clue: There are two counties in the picture.

Geoff.

Sorry, wrong spelling. I was thinking West coast of Scotland - Arran. :o
