Is there no critique because it's perfect or because it's crap?

Hi Guy,

I do like this shot, however, personally, I would prefer to have either seen the flower, or the background.

The background is very interesting, and I feel the flowers clash, so from that point of view, I would have prefered you to have taken a nice low shot from the path, without the distraction of the flowers.....

Alternatively, I would have taken a shot of the flowers, and thrown the background out of focus.

Hope that helps!

Ben

*LOL

For me this shot lacks a true focal point - something detailed to draw the eye relative to the overall scene. In this case, you've clearly featured the flowers (and they're in focus), but they nevertheless seem lost in a sea of greenery and other distractions, so their impact is negligible.

You can either look at a scene as a whole - using a tripod where possible and closing the aperture down to ensure a strong depth of field - composing so that you have elements which lead you through the shot logically, or you can have a definite subject matter, which you can highlight using a narrower depth of field and careful focusing to really make it stand out, while the surrounding elements serve as an out-of-focus supporting act to the main star. In this case I just think your image - while undoubtedly of a beautiful scene - is compositionally a little weak.

Hope this makes some sense :D

Thanks for the input, I see exactly what you are saying and I think I shall return to the scene of the crime and redo that.

It's a constant learning curve, this game. Listen, if and when you revisit the scene, post your new version and we'll see how you got on. No pressure, you understand... ;)
