There was a time when a new dSLR from the likes of Canon would have created a bit of a stir on this site, esp one with over 10mp. Yet today there has been barely a murmur other than in passing.

Are we getting blase about such an event? After all we have had new models from Nikon & Canon, not to mention Olympus, Sony, Samsung, Pentax even Panasonic already this year.

I find it odd that there has not been more said, when unlike many other models, this new one from Canon raises the bar again. We already of course have 10mp cameras, even ones with built in anti shake, but to have both and with the rest of the spec in a camera in this priceband I find amazing.

Seems to me anyway its going to give Nikon a run for its money, and I wonder which will be the first on the shelves.

TBH I'm more than happy with my 8.3mp APS-H sensor and blindingly fast shutter (wink) so I wont be buying (laugh-out-loud)

Hi Stephen, of course the new Canon EOS-400D is very significant. I've just written up an editorial and (see http://dpnow.com/2946.html).

Canon today said that in the UK the household penetration of the DSLR is 3%, compared to 10% with film SLRs in their heyday. Canon is optimistic that the lure of the digital aspect of photography will see DSLRs peaking at around 20% of households eventually, so the DSLR market is still very young and full of potential.

Canon sells as many as 10,000 EOS-350Ds in the UK alone per month. I feel the question is whether or not the 400D is up to the job of maintaining the stellar sales performance of the 350D, which has been way out in the lead in unit sales.

With the Sony Alpha A100 now only £599 with kit lens, plus the likes of the Pentax K-100D, Nikon D80, etc., the competition is much tougher.

Interesting times!

Does the Canon EOS-400D have anti shake? I can find no mention of this in the details on the Canon web site. I would have expected an important new feature like that to have been included amongst those listed.

Ah sorry John, my mistake, what I meant to say was the the sensor shakes in order to knock off dust, apparently everytime the camera is switched on, its anti-dust I suppose, not anti-shake (smile) a not unimportant difference (laugh-out-loud)

There is actually a rather informative video about the 'integrated sensor cleaning system' at DPReview if anyone is interested.

Hi Stephen,
I'm glad you have due interests in dust cleaning too. (smile)
Apart from the new ultrasonic dust removal from the low pass filter, I'm interested in knowing if or not the second stage of the dust removal countermeasures can be also applied to previous models such as 350D or 20D.

Canon says the CMOS sensor "remembers" where the remaining sticky dusts are and by using the bundled processing software, we can remove those remaining dusts easily from the pic. (as a post processing)

if this is also applicable to all other EOS models by firmware updating, it would be nice.

I wonder why the post-processing option is necessary with Canon's solution? It's not with the Olympus Supersonic Wave Filter. There has been much speculation of the differences between the Canon and Olympus dust measures. Canon would have needed to implement its system differently if it avoided the need to licence it from Olympus. Has there been any discussion on this on Japanese sites, Yoshi?

Hi Ian,
I think it's a reasonable question many would conceive of about the differences.

I have to admit I'm not following japanese "discussion" sites very closely - well, vertually none, I would say - tho I adimit I'm trying to follow news site more.
(smile)
But will try to find some relevant & interesting information.
OTOH I would also appreciate similar discussions at DPNow, of course! (angel)

Hi Ian,
I went a discussion site famous for its price information, but so far the focus of the discussion looks built-in image stabilization issue, saying the lack of it is a serious handicap against Alpha 100...

and also prices are another important topics.

Then I went the officail site for the first time after the 400D announcement. There I found some interesting movies which introduces the dust removal measures.

http://cweb.canon.jp/camera/kissd/special/index06.html

Just click "MOVIE bla bla ..." in the middle of the screen. It explains how the survived dust ( or to put it differently, the dusts the ultrasonic movement failed to remove) are removed on software. It was interesing for me. First one has to take a pic of white paper to register where the remaining dusts are.
(smile)

FYI on the same page, you can also have a look of the movie of the first stage of removing dusts, ie. the US movement.

P.S. A similar movie might be available on non-Japanse sites but sorry I did not check it.
