Camera review: Canon EOS-1D (preliminary 2)

20th December  - 2001
By Ian Burley

As I write this I have just had to endure the handing back of my review Canon EOS-1D after an all too-short four and a half days. But that didn’t stop me shooting around 300 pictures, although the sunshine only obliged this morning.

The serious work of evaluating the results from the 1D and cramming them into an article here will take a little time. But until then, I’ll be posting a few more preliminary pages like this.

Can you tell which is which?

Today, just for a little fun - and please don’t take it too seriously - I’m taking up a suggestion from Gary Eickemeier. He suggested displaying shots taken on the 1D and an Olympus E-20 I happen to have at the moment. Here are two subjects, both taken at the same time using the respective cameras’ Program settings and saved in JPEG form using the highest quality compression settings.

To keep things manageable, I’ve cropped the original images. The pictures below link to 100% size originals - users of slow connections should note that these images are around 200K a piece and will take up to a minute each to display.

Once you’ve had a look - click the feedback button and tell me which you think came from the Olympus and which came from the Canon. I’ll publisha summary of your responses later.

Above, is a Tudor cottage in the picture postcard village of Aldbury, near Whipsnade. Taken this morning, I was blessed with mid-morning direct winter sunshine - the pond in front is frozen, incidentally.

Below are statue fountains in Trafalgar Square, central London. There is a noticeable difference in the colour of these two. I ought tp point out that these were taken in fast fading light at the end of the day.
