Welcome to a new season of Picture of the Day (POTD) here on DPNow.com. Each week days we'll be featuring a photo selected from the DPNow.com users' gallery and to kick things of we have a superb macro shot by mowgli (Maurice Brehaut) from Guernsey in the Channel Islands. The fearsome monster insect is in fact a harmless May Bug or Cock-chafer beetle and was the subject of a recent discussion on the DPNow forum. The 'boulders' are of gravel and not sand so there is an illusion that the insect is much smaller than it really is. In fact these beetles are roughly an inch long (2-2.5cm). Maurice used a Canon IXUS 117 HS compact camera in macro mode. When you think about it, digital compacts are ideal for macro photography because their smaller sensors guarantee a lot more depth of field. This example is excellent because of the super detail Maurice has managed to record and also because of the soft, natural, light. The icing on the cake comes in the form of the water drops on beetle’s carapace.
