Josh Bear is our chosen photographer for this Monday's Digital Photography Now Picture of the Day. Josh normally uses a Canon EOS-5D Mark II, although in recent weeks he has been highly focused on his new Olympus E-P1. But this picture was taken just before the E-P1 was launched. It was taken at Tyneham, Dorset; a fascinating, unusual, and historic village that was commandeered by the army during the second world war, and never returned to the villagers. The picture was discussed on the DPNow forum a few months back. Here, Josh has pictured a line of children's' clothes pegs in the local school.
When you consider the school has not held classes since 1943, the picture conjures a range of emotions. Where is Ivy Wellman now? Apparently, the village was to have been returned to the locals after the war, but that never happened. What did they feel when this dreadful news broke? News reel footage of the 1940s is mainly monochrome, so the vibrant colours of the name labels is fascinating. It's also reminds me of my kids' own 21st century primary school. Josh's picture really makes me think that the reality of the 1940s is colour, not black and white.
