Today, our featured photographer on the DPNow Picture of the Day is a photographer registered on the DPNow forum and galleries as beachcomber. This is a very low angle view of a sculpture in Ramsgate, Kent. In another view you can see that there are 'molecules' inside the hands, though these are missing from the view here. Beachcomber has also posted a sunset silhouette of the same sculpture.
Beachcomber explains: "This is the Bronze sculpture "Hands and Molecules" by David Barnes, located on the Eastcliffe of Ramsgate, in Kent. The sculpture itself is a landmark on the "National Cycle network" and links Ramsgate to other cycle paths all over the UK. I hope the artist won't mind too much, but I surgically removed his "Molecules" using Photoshop(!) as they limited the photo's appeal to a lot of people. (This sculpture was commissioned by the drug Corporation Pfizer) After removing the the Molecules, which went from one hand to the other in and arch, I did a smidge of dodging and burning followed by some sharpening."
I think that what makes this shot is the extremely low angle view, looking up, so that the hands are surrounded by sky. You can see that the grass at the base of the sculpture is in fact grass very close to the front of the camera's lens. Is the removal of the molecules an issue for you? Let us know!
