Pol
has long been a leading light here on DPNow. Her shot of an acer leaf falling in mid air is a beautiful capture. The picture also seems to combine the warmth of a sunny day in the background, with a hint of a blue sky, while the foreground points to Autumn, with golden leaves and that sharply-defined faller. Pol, very modestly, puts it all down to luck:
"Aha - the falling leaf, the chance in a million, once-in-a-lifetime lucky shot. The picture was taken with a Pentax K10D + Pentax FA 50mm f1.4.
"I was aiming for a very shallow dof, close and wide, based on Autumn colours, inspired by some of the artistic work of John Washington. I was very close to the branches, maybe only 2-3 ft away and what you see is near enough the full frame.
"I'd used f/1.6 and a shutter speed of 1/4000 and was focused on a leaf. I'd aimed to include blue sky as I'd wanted all the ambient colour combinations. The leaf was attached to a very delicate spider thread and spinning in the breeze. As luck would have it, the thread must have snapped just as I clicked the shutter."
