Pegwell Bay, by Martin

At first glance, this picture from Martin is fairly routine. But if you dwell on it long enough the picture reveals more. It's a good example of composition by the rule of thirds, with the generator cooling towers off-set nicely towards the top right corner. The reflection of the towers in the muddy water add some structure too. Then there is the gull towards the bottom of the frame and the two figures right in the bottom right hand corner. I also like the unusual hue of the image. The more I look at the image the more I like it.

Martin explains: "It was taken during a short break to Kent in August 2007. We were walking above the cliffs to west of Ramsgate when this view came into sight. It was late afternoon and although the sky was overcast there was an overall strong sunlight behind the cloud reflecting on the receding tide, that together with the redundant Richborough power station made, I thought, a striking picture. I was using my Panasonic Lumix FZ30 at f11 at 1/400 sec. I made a few adjustments in PS mainly warming it up a little as I thought the original was a bit too grey."

Although retired, Martin is still kept busy: "I am still living in Yorkshire, retired from paid work, but busy with my children’s children and dog whilst they are working." Martin's interest in photography has been a long one: "Always been interested in photography - Got my first camera when I was about 11 which produced B&W blurry 2” X 1” images. Still haven’t bought myself a DSLR which I promised myself some time ago." I certainly think it's time Martin rewarded himself! But he adds: "I rather like the FZ30 particularly the Tilt and Turn screen which is a boon when shooting below waste level or on the tripod."

You can see more of Martin's work in his DPNow gallery - and it's well worth a look.
