Banana, by Frank Milnes:
How DPNow Pictures of the Day are selected
Frank Milnes, one of DPNow's more recent recruits and who is known as FrankM on the DPNow discussion forum and photo galleries last month, is today's featured photographer on the DPNow Picture of the Day. His low key mono composition of a bunch of bananas is full of texture and tonality.
As Frank explains, his picture was the result of an artistically-minded project: "The picture was an exercise in texture & form using everyday objects - in this case bananas. It's taken quite simply with a bunch of bananas on a black sheet of paper in daylight via the kitchen window. It's one of three in B&W - bananas, cabbage leaf and red pepper."
This begs the question - how different would a red pepper look compared to a green one using the mono techniques Frank used?

Expatriate, Frank, explains: "I'm 60, British and live in Madrid, Spain. I started taking pictures at the age of nine when I got my first camera, a Kodak Brownie 127 with fixed everything - focus, aperture and shutter speed. At 12 I progressed to 35mm photography being given an Ilford Sportsman. Now I could set the shutter speed, aperture and focus but having no exposure meter I had to guess the exposure according to the printed guide that came with the film.
"I took my first colour film - Kodakchrome in 1960. It had to be slides because prints were far too expensive. I stayed with this camera until the 1980's when I bought my first SLR. Nevertheless in the mid 80's the involvement in other things caused me to abandon photography other than holiday snaps etc.
"In August 2006 I decided to start again and so bought my first (and only) digital camera, an Olympus E500. The world of photography has changed drastically with digital cameras and the internet opening up possibilities never dreamt of only a few years ago. I'm still learning!"
Aren't we all, Frank!?
