Sample images from pre-release Olympus E-410 DSLR taken in Las Vegas last week are available for download

UPDATE 14th March: If you downloaded the original set of images we made available on Monday, we can only apologise, as these turned out not to be the correct images. But we have a new download file of E-410 sample images for you and all is explained below.

On Thursday morning, bright and early before the first day of the PMA show, here in Las Vegas, Olympus invited European journalists attending the show to witness sunrise in the desert outside the city. Yours truly was on the road at, wait for it, 4AM... the things we do! Although the new Olympus E-410 and the E-510 Four Thirds DSLRs aren't scheduled to ship for the best part of three months, some pre-production engineering samples were available to try during the early morning expedition into the desert.

I had thought promised samples for publication were to have been taken during our desert expedition, but the samples we have received so far were taken in the Las Vegas metropolis.

We have three images taken using an E-410 pre-production camera made available to us for publication and distribution. You can download a zip archive of the image files for personal evaluation only. Please note that this single file download is 9MB in size and downloading it should not be attempted unless you have a broadband internet connection.

It should be made clear that the sample images provided are not obtained direct from the sample cameras. The firmware for in-camera JPEG creation from the RAW sensor data is not yet finalised. As we understand it, the RAW files from the cameras were transferred to a JPEG generation simulator and the supplied JPEG images are the result.

Whether these images will actually say much about the actual or potential image quality of the E-410 and E-510 is open to debate, especially as they aren't provided at the full ten megapixel resolution, but they are probably the very first images from the E-410 that you are likely to get your hands on.
