Sisterly Hug, by Martin Prior:

Today it's the turn of Martin Prior, who posts on the DPNow discussion forum and photo gallery under the name 'martin', to be featured on Picture of the Day. Martin's delightful portrait of his granddaughters provides further evidence to support the argument that you don't need a huge number of megapixels and the most expensive of cutting edge camera equipment to produce a great image. Martin used a four megapixel, 10x zoom Olympus C-765UZ, a camera that was first launched three or four years ago - an age in digital camera terms.

"I was really pleased with this picture, explains Martin, who adds: "I have been trying to get a half decent photograph of my granddaughters for ages. How I envy the pros that manage to get children to pose as well as take a good photo at a single sitting.

"However, my daughter-in-law asked me to take a couple of pictures for their passports so I had to set my stall out. I used a south facing room with the sun streaming through the window. The off white curtains diffused the light nicely and I clicked away.

"Having completed the individual ones I tried to get the little angels to pose and smile together - NO CHANCE – and then, without prompting, they began to mess about giggle and hug one another. I took my chance and came away with a few images to choose from.

"I used this particular image as an entry in the "Family" Salon contest - as usual I was late with my entry and realised after posting  it needed a small crop and maybe a border."

Martin is thinking about an equipment upgrade: "I took this using my Olympus C765, which is a nice little camera with a big lens. I have really been tempted to upgrade to a DSLR of late and the new OLY E410 seems very attractive but perhaps will be a bit expensive for me.
However I spotted a new Panasonic FZ30 on EBAY last month made a modest bid and surprisingly won so I shall give it try and maybe put it back on EBAY later and spend a bit more. "
