3516: Tetley Tea announce winner of student photography competition

Release Issued by Tetley Tea:

Winner announced for Tetley tea student photography competition

A talented student, Gabrielle Prince, from The University of Derby, has beaten over 400 entries in the fourth Tetley student photography competition to win the first prize of the very latest Fuji digital camera, valued at around £1,500, £250 cash and an advert in University Caterer Magazine.

Gabrielle’s entry featured a bright yellow teapot with Camomile smile tea being drunk in a café environment.

This year Tetley offered students the opportunity to enter two different areas of the competition, ‘Out of Home’ which focused on Tetley tea in a café culture setting and ‘Retail’ which focused on the journey a pack of Tetley takes from the supermarket to the home.

The category winners were narrowed down to Lucy Cheveralls from Norwich School of Art & Design for Retail and Sam Steven from Glasgow Metropolitan for ‘Out of Home’.

She said: “I am absolutely delighted to have won the Tetley competition. It was a real shock when my tutor called to tell me and I'm really excited about having a new camera. I had been thinking recently that I needed to upgrade my kit but did not have the money, so the prize is a real bonus.

“I am very grateful to my tutors at the University for their advice and encouragement and also to family and friends who have really supported me whilst I've been studying."

The runners up from both categories included, Sarah McCartney from Leicester College, Lorna McLean from Reid Kerr College, Kevin Meechan from Glasgow Metropolitan and Liam Wyncherley from UCE.

Merits were given to Lindsay Docherty and Lorna McDonald from Glasgow Metropolitan, Jason Hynes from Cleveland College of Art & Design, Jeffery Tansay from Burton College and Tom Bliss from Dunstable College.

Allen Hunt, Brand Manager for Tetley said, “The standard of entries was outstandingly strong and the judging process proved much harder than expected. Both the retail and the out of home entries showed amazing skill and creativity. The judging team included a professional photographer, as well as the artistic director from University Caterer magazine so the overall winner was chosen not only by Tetley but by a strong creative team. Gabrielle’s entry stood out from the others as it combined creativity, technical skill and had a strong communication of the brief.’

Mark Hall, Senior Lecturer in Photography, from The University of Derby said: “The competition certainly put the student’s creativity to the test. The team here enjoyed collaborating in answering a specific technical brief with tough guidelines, which they will experience when they work in a commercial environment. We are really happy to have won this contest.”

Allen Hunt added, “The photographs were of an incredibly high standard and the interpretations of the brief were all exciting and innovative. The fact that this year we extended the competition to include a retail section on top of the out of home section meant that we received an even wider group of entries than was expected. The shortlist stood out for their ability to answer our brief, which is what positive communication is all about.”
