20,000 fake Canon branded cameras in the EU alone
Boxes that, on the face of it, look like they contain real branded cameras can give unsuspecting members of the public a nasty surprise when they get home. They often contain a cheap plastic camera that might be pushing it to categorise as a toy. Indeed, many don't apparently even work.
Canon is one of the more popular brands to be faked and this has prompted the company to join forces with the EU to raise awareness of the fake camera menace. 20,000 fake Canon cameras have been seized to date. We can only guess the number that are getting through.
James Leipnik, Chief of Communication and Corporate Relations, Canon Europe, said, "Canon is concerned about protecting the rights of the consumer who is the number one victim. Fake goods may sometimes seem like a bargain but there are always hidden dangers for consumers. The person who sells you a fake won't be around to help if it doesn't work properly; fakes don't come with guarantees. Only the genuine article can offer a good deal."
So, next time you're down the pub and some camera bargains are doing the rounds, remember this news story!
