Ever since Canon announced the new i850 and i950 A4 photo ink-jet models in the new year (click here), we have been bombarded with requests for news of a larger A3 version to succeed the S-9000. The wait is over as today Canon unveils the i9100.

Like the i850 and i950, maximum printed resolution has been upped from 1200x2400ppi to 1200x4800dpi. However, rather surprisingly, the i9100 doesn’t get the second innovation featured in its smaller siblings; 2 picolitre ink droplets. The i9100 has to make do with 4 picolitre droplets, the same size as the out-going S-9000.

There had been some criticism of ultra-fine banding problems on prints from some more demanding S-9000 users, so it will be interesting to see if move up to 4800ppi sorts that issue out for good.

Speed remains a key plus point of the i9100, with a claimed 60 second A4 page completion and two minutes for an A3 page. Notably, Canon has remained content with a standard USB 1.1 port, unlike the slower rival Epson Stylus Pro 2100 which has a USB 2.0 Hi-Speed port.

Correction Canon's press release lead us to believe that the announced PostScript RIP was included in the price of the printer. Canon has since contacted dpnow.com to clarify that the software is an optional extra tailored for the new i9100.

Available from May, the i9100 comfortably undercuts the £599 Epson 2100 at £419 inc.VAT.

Official Canon UK press release:

27 February 2003

Canon announces the Bubble Jet i9100 printer – setting new standards in the A3+ market for professional and amateur photographers

Canon, leader in photographic and imaging technology, is pleased to announce the launch of its new A3+ printer – the Bubble Jet i9100. With the launch of this sophisticated machine, Canon brings 4800 x 1200 dpi photo printing technology to the A3+ market for the first time and sets a new standard in fast, high-resolution printing.

"The speed and high-resolution of the i9100, plus the fact that it offers outstanding quality full-bleed and photo-standard prints in a range of sizes, makes it the perfect printer in its price range for anyone requiring the best graphic reproduction available," says Malcolm Hills, head of Canon Consumer Imaging in the UK.

Quality and Speed

The i9100 combines great colour reproduction quality with accuracy and speed, utilising Canon’s now standard advanced MicroFine Droplet Technology™ to give accurate dot placement, dot shape and dot density. The six-colour ink system uses the world’s lightest density inks, and when combined with 4800 x 1200 dpi dot resolution and a tiny 4pl drop size, the i9100 gives grain-free photographs with up to 49 colour shades per pixel for enhanced image depth.

The i9100 uses a high density, high-resolution 1200 dpi print head with 3072 nozzles – 10 times as many ink nozzles as its closest competitor. The i9100 is capable of printing a full A4 colour photo in about one minute, twice as fast as its closest competitor, and a full A3 photo on Canon’s Photo Paper Pro in less than two minutes.

Single Ink technology

Incorporating Canon’s highly praised Single Ink technology, the Bubble Jet i9100 offers individually replaceable ink tanks designed to eliminate waste and save consumers money, as well as an accurate ink-low and ink-out detection system to ensure that no print jobs are wasted.

The Bubble Jet i9100 also achieves fast borderless photo printing enabling the production of images that are indistinguishable from traditional photographs. It is capable of borderless printing not only on A3, A4 and 4"x6" formats but also on A3+ and a new 5"x7" size.

This makes borderless printing realistic for everyday use, as the i9100 prints edge-to-edge photos up to five times faster than its competitors.

The i9100 comes with Exif Print support for both Mac and Windows platforms with the included Easy-PhotoPrint application. Exif Print improves the quality of Exif 2.2 compliant digital images using additional information captured at the time the photograph was taken to deliver better quality, more natural-looking photographs.

The i9100 also offers a comprehensive range of photo software. This includes Canon PhotoRecord, which allows easy multi-layout and auto-scaling of images to different paper sizes; Canon ZoomBrowser EX for archiving, retouching and composing slide shows; and Canon PhotoStitch for combining digital images together to create a large panoramic image.
Advanced printer driver features such as Photo Noise Reduction, Photo Optimizer PRO and Vivid Photo complete the package.

PostScript RIP

The addition of the iProof PowerRIP 2000™ PostScript Raster Image Processor to the i9100 package provides a highly competitive, professional contract quality proofing solution. This allows graphic artists to achieve perfectly accurate colour proofs.

The i9100 has a USB interface giving compatibility with Windows 98, Windows Millennium Edition, Windows 2000, Windows XP and Mac OS. It can be shared across a variety of network environments using the Pricom C-6200U (10/100 Base-TX) print server.
